Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place for her. Ford was then able to apply to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
